Journal 9

1.This week my first transaction is with Columbia Sportswear. I am trading this company because they have a big catalyst, which is Christmas and they sell a lot of winter sportswear. I think this will cause prices to go up quite a bit. Their 52 week range is 41.13-70.64 and are currently selling at about 50.53, so they are about in the middle of their 52 week range and have a lot of room to go up. I predict that in the next week or so the price will go up to at least $53. They are a large cap company and their sector is consumer goods. One of their main competitors is Nike. Nike is currently at about the top of their 52 week range so I don't think they are going to get much higher than that. I believe that Columbia Sportswear was a better company to trade because they have more of a chance to get more money with the winter season.

2.My second transaction this week is with Best Buy. I am trading this company and the catalyst is Christmas. I feel that with the holiday right around the corner prices will go up. Their 52 week range is 21.79-43.75 and are currently selling at about 27.00. I predict that within the next week or so this price should rise to about $31. They are a large cap company and their sector is services. One of their main competitors is Amazon. They are about in the middle of their 52 week range, but they haven't been doing to well for the last few weeks, so i don't think they are going to go up too much more. I think Best Buy was a better choice because they have more room to go up in price since they are more near the bottom of their 52 week range. Also in the past they have done really well around this time of the year, so I think it will probably happen again this year.

Job Shadow

Next week I am going to be job shadowing at the hospital. I called and spoke with Cassie Tinsley to confirm the job shadowing. I am pretty excited to go to this job shadow because I am interested in what actually goes on in the hospital besides the stuff that we see as a patient. Working in a hospital is not really one of my career choices, but this will be good for me to experience since it will probably be the only time I get to experience it.

Questions

1. What is your opinion of the topic of the video? Explain why.
I think that it is kind of wrong because they it is unfair to most of the country who doesn't know what's going on. They shouldn't have that kind of power over everyone else and profit from it. But at the same time I think that since it is their job and they are in the position to know what is going on, they should be able to sort of take advantage off it, as long as it doesn't get out of control.

2. What can you do about your opinion? How can you make your opinion count?
Personaly I can't do much about my opinion, I think it is up to them to decide what is right and wrong and weather or no that should be considered cheating the system. Of course everyone else is going to think it's wrong, because they want that same opprtunity, but many people have other opportunities in life just as these people do. I can make my opinion count by expressing that not everything is fair, and it isn't really our choice weather they have a secret advantage or not.

3. What is insider trading? What was the information that caused Martha Stewart to go to prision?
Insider trading is when people are trading stocks with inside information that hasnt been released tot he public. Martha Steward went to jail because she had been doing insider training, and when officials confronted her about it she lied to them telling them that she didn't know it was going on.

4. What is black Friday, and when did it gets its name? What is cyber Monday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving where everything goes on sale in stores. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving where everything goes on sale on the internet.

Journal Week 8

1. The first transaction I made is I am trading with Hallmark Financial Services Inc. I decided to trade this company because with the holiday seanson just around the corner everyone will be buying cards and gifts, so I believe this catalyst will help them a lot. Their 52 week range gpes from 6.32 - 9.37 and they are currently selling at about 8.04, so they are doing pretty good, but there is still more room for improvement. I predict that the price will rise to about $9.00 buy the end of next week. They are a large cap company and their sector is Financial. One of their competitors is Hartford Financial Services. They are currently trading at 17.21 and they don't have much room to go up, so I'm hoping they won't do too much better. In the beginning of the year Hallmark had been doing really good, but then had a big drop in the summer, so I bet they will stay doing well for at least another month.

2. My second transaction this week is A trade with RadioShack. I made this trade because I think the holiday season is a catalyst that will help RadioShack. Their 52 week range goes from 10.64 to 19.74. Right now they are selling at 12.04, but I predict within the next couple weeks they will o up to about $15.00. They are a large cap company and their sector is Services. One of their competitors is Best Buy Co. Right now they are selling at 27.52, which is almost at the top of their 52 week range, but since they don't have much room to improve they probably won't be making too much more.

Candy Stocks

When I first walked into the room I was very confused as to what we were doing. It was super loud and the room was small and hot and there was candy all over the floor. There were two white boards in the room with types of candy and prices on them. It was then that I realized we were probably going to start trading the stocks. when we started to gether the candy from around the room it was like a race, so I just wanted to get as much candy as I could find. I didnt know what each peice exactly meant yet, so I just grabbed anything I could find. Then In realized that each peice cost something else, and that all the chocolate was like on the stock market and the prices changed, but the laffy taffy all stayed the same price. As we started trading we decided to buy the chocolate with the laffy taffy because we thought of the laffy taffy as actual money and the chocolate as stocks on the stock market. As the prices of each peice of candy flucuated we started to figure out what we needed to keep and what we needed to sell. In about the middle of the game we decided that we were not going to trade any of our chocolate for anything, because it was pretty valuable. By the end of the game we found out this might not have been the best choice because when the price of the chocolate was less than the price of the laffy taffy we noticed that we had lost a lot of money and the whole time we weren't quite on the right track. I discovered that this is pretty similar to what the stock market is actually like because it was very chaotic, there were many different deals going on, and you had to know exactly when to start buying certain stocks. I think this game gave us a good look as to how the stock market actually works.

Game Standards

3.2 Students formulate solutions to economic problems.
-In order to get to the next level on the game, they need to be able to figure out how to play the game. For everything we do we need to have enough money. The money in this game gets us almost everything we need, but in order to get some things you need other thiongs to help. For example in order to run a buisness you need electricity, which you need to put in, and you also need employees. In order to hire the employees they need certain items to do thier job correctly. So for each problem that comes up the student will need to find a soulution for each one and take one step at a time to move on in the game. Therefore as the students play the game enough they will formulate a solution to each economic problem.

3.1 Students explain how different economic sytems are organized for production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.
-Each system is organized to do its own thing. Different system does its own thing to make everything more organized, and so there isn't as much competition. For example a shoe factory focouses on shoes, where as a taxi buissness focouses on driving people around, not selling shoes. Or how a school is much different than a show company. Each organization is centered on doing their own thing.

3.4 Students demonstrate an understanding of economic principals that influence individual, financial planning.
-Each company makes their own money. Some companies may make more money than another company because their buisness is more or less successful. So the better financial plans they have, the better they will most likely end up.

4.3 Students evaluate the impact of technology and how it has shaped history and influenced the modern world.
-Technology has helped us grow as a country, and a world. We are able to communicate better and as technology grows we are able to come up with faster, and better ways to build more efficient buildings. Without technology we would still be living in wood cabins with no electricity.

4.2 Students analyze current events to better understand the world in which they live.
-Current events such as upgrades in the buildings, and new buildings being built help make our world bigger. It also gives us a better chance to experience more and grow off what we have.

4.4 Students explain how past events impact present and the future.
-Past events impact the present and the future because without the actions we have made in the past, we would not be where we are at now, and we would not be bale to progress any further in the futre. For example if we never launched a contract for a bussinesess we wouldnt earn very much money, and that would impact the amount of other bussiness we could build.

5.1 Students interperate charts, maps, and graphs to answer question dealing with people, places, events, or enviorments.
-The map of the city helps us to see whats going on. There are some charts that show us what we need to hire people, or upgrade our bussinesses.

5.3 Students demonstrate an ability to organize and proccess information about people, places, and enviorments.
-We need to have the ability to organize people by their occupation. For example, a teacher doesn't have the ability to work in a hospital, because they probably don't know enough about the occupation. They also need the right materials to be able to do their job. We need to be able to organize places because if a bussiness needs something imparticular then they need to be located in a certain place. Also in this game we need to have a certain number of ecology, so we need to make sure we have parks and trees around the town.
